Out Gorgie Way
Auld Gorgie Road when I was wee
was sich a place for fun an' glee;
D'ye mind the tares on summer nights?
The games we played: the feuds an' fights.
Oor chief domain, an' place tae meet,
was White Park oot tae Westfield Street.
And Robbie Ave' tae Wardlaw Place
was jist the length for runnin' race.
D'ye mind the byres an' – what a lark;
yon haunted hoose at Saughton Park?
At Roseburn, dookin' there was great,
An' lurin' mennons tae their fate;
The Pansy Walk looks much the same
(I wonder it that was its name?).
At Sawmills we wad never tire;
D'ye mind the glue works gaun on fire?
The station road, an' then the schule,
where we a' learned the golden rule.
The matinee, wi' groans an' cries;
D'ye mind the rush fur Skinner's pies?
There's quite a change they say – and how,
but still tae me, 'twas then as now,
“Auld Gorgie,” right frae start tae last,
is aye that Gorgie o' the past.
